RSS reading habits

I recently forced myself to spend more time reading again, as it had become a somewhat obligatory Saturday morning job. I'm not just talking about RSS only (I've got a pile of magazines and books laying on my desk), but I'm following this unwritten rule to first empty my RSS inbox, then pick up the magazines and leave the books for vacation time.

So I'm now opening my Google Reader at least once a day and so far it's been working. Judging from the new Reader Trends graph though (they're now displaying the number of items posted versus the number of items you've read), I still need to increase the number of posts I'm reading. However, this relatively low number of items read is due to the fact that I use Google Reader in List View, only clicking those posts that look interesting (based on title or author).

It seems many Google Reader users are focused on the number of unread items just like it are unread mails. I think this is because how Google Reader works; a linear reader where everything is ordered from new to old with limited grouping methods.

Now, the question is, is the date the most important meta data from feed items? I guess not. Some feeds go slow while others update every hour. And in Google Reader all those items get mixed up.

In Netvibes it's easier to categorize your feeds and drag them where ever you want them on your screen. You can make the left column the fast moving feeds while keeping the right column for the slower feeds.

You can put similar feeds next to each other to discover overlapping items and discover the latest buzz. And finally, because of the physical limitation of your screen size you are forced to move the most interesting feeds above the page fold. Feeds that are moved below the page fold are likely to be kicked out sooner or later.

It's all about what you're used to, but I stick to Netvibes.
