  • Move your Wordpress blog to a new domain in 15 minutes
Posted on 26 July 2009 in Wordpress, Tip and Google
Due to some trademark issues, I had to move the Viva Veggie blog (where my girlfriend blogs about veggie recipes and places) to a new domain last Friday (thanks to Frank at Openminds for the much appreciated legal advice by the way). I wasn't particularly looking forward to doing so: moving a website to a new domain is just one thing, making sur .. read more
  • RSS reading habits (one comment)
Posted on 28 October 2008 in Google, Reader, Rss and Stats
I recently forced myself to spend more time reading again, as it had become a somewhat obligatory Saturday morning job. I'm not just talking about RSS only (I've got a pile of magazines and books laying on my desk), but I'm following this unwritten rule to first empty my RSS inbox, then pick up the magazines and leave the books for vacation time .. read more
  • We're googling less (four comments)
Posted on 13 September 2008 in Google, Eye Tracking, Seo and Search
This is interesting: while URLs are out and we're googling almost everything, we're spending less time on Google than ever. Really, if you're not above the fold, you can pretty much forget about it. Found through Think Eyetracking.
  • Adsense in Comic Sans? (four comments)
Posted on 24 June 2008 in Google, Adsense and Comic Sans
I was just browsing Meetup (there's an OpenCoffee Antwerp next Tuesday) while I came across this Adsense skyscraper in Comic Sans. At first it got me laughing: why on earth would the Meetup guys decide to make their ads appear in Comic Sans? Meetup sure isn't the best looking webapp ever, but it's clear they do know what looks good or doesn't. .. read more
  • Gmail IMAP for the impatient (three comments)
Posted on 30 October 2007 in Google, Gmail and Imap
For all of you dying for IMAP support in Gmail: switch your Gmail/Google Hosted language settings to English (US) and the IMAP settings will show up. It worked for me at least and was comfirmed by some people on my Twitter. Others reported the trick wasn't working, so I guess Google is still busy rolling out the feature for all accounts. For th .. read more
  • Buzz tracking using Yahoo! Pipes (two comments)
Posted on 14 July 2007 in Google, Reader, Yahoo and Pipes
I recently switched to Google Reader to keep track of my RSS feeds, which means I also use Google Reader to track some Technorati, Blogpulse and Serph buzz feeds. Problem was however that Google Reader kept marking the same posts unread, constantly filling my reader with "new" posts. Pascal suggested this was due to minor differences in the Tech .. read more
  • Finally switching to Google Reader (four comments)
Posted on 6 July 2007 in Google, Rss and Reader
A few days ago I forced myself to try Google Reader for some time. I had played with it before of course, but I wasn't convinced a webbased RSS reader would be able to replace the desktop client (being NetNewsWire) I had been using for quite some time. I chose NetNewsWire mainly because of its synchronisation capabilities, allowing me to check m .. read more
  • Web analytics TV (three comments)
Posted on 26 June 2007 in Google, Analytics and Screencast
I'm a web stats fanatic, but I know too little about how to actually analyse those statistics in order to improve results. Somehow I could never really motivate myself enough to take a closer look. Lately however I started experimenting with some of the sites I author, trying to optimise them as much as possible. I actually enjoyed exploring the .. read more
  • Privacy anyone? (nine comments)
Posted on 4 June 2007 in Privacy, Google and Maps
Still not convinced privacy is dead? Just check Google Map's awesome Street View functionality.
  • Have you Googled yourself lately? (one comment)
Posted on 2 June 2007 in Ego-marketing, Google and Ungoogleable
Apparently 18% of the people participating with the poll on CVverificatie.nl (which is a site aiming at Dutch HR professionals) always Google an applicant's name. 68% does so depending on the job. I'll just assume that means "in case of IT/communications kinds of jobs". In other words: if you're an internet/multimedia graduate looking for a job, .. read more
  • Another ego-marketing tip of the week
Posted on 20 April 2007 in Ego-marketing, Blog, Google and Resume
I know it's been two weeks since I posted the first ego-marketing tip of the week, so I guess I'll have to think of another name for these ego-marketing posts. Anyway, last time I wrote about the importance of having your name ranked high in Google, being it either the organic or sponsored search results. Obviously, before you focus on your rank .. read more
  • Ego-marketing tip of the week
Posted on 6 April 2007 in Ego-marketing, Google and Ungoogleable
Google - and its fellow search engines - account for a considerable amount of daily website traffic. Businesses know about that, and spend billions a year in order to get more visibility. A lot less common are individual efforts to rank high in search engines. A while ago it turned out the new Skynet (Belgian web portal) CEO was completely ungoo .. read more
